Help with Ready

If you are having difficulties teaching your dog the “Ready” command, try these tips…

Lesson: Ready in the Obedience FUNdamentals.

Rewards

Find Treats and Rewards that work best for your dog and remember that you may need to change the treat value.

Timing

Reward your dog immediately – within a couple of seconds. The longer it takes for you to reward your dog, the less your dog will understand.

Process

If your dog isn’t looking:

  • Use a treat or toy to lure your dog’s attention towards you. You can do this by waving a treat or toy near your dog’s nose and then slowly moving the treat towards your face. Caution: Keep sufficient distance between your face and your dog’s especially if your dog will jump or snap at a treat. Consider lowering the treat value if your dog is too eager.
  • A quick snap and release on the leash followed by immediate praise for returning their attention to you.

If you plan to pursue competitive obedience, “Ready” is the best word to use because the obedience judge will ask you if you are ready before beginning an exercise and your response will be “Ready”. Other command words to consider are: focus, watch me, look, or eyes.
