Help with Roll Over
Article Categories
If you are having difficulties teaching your dog to “Roll Over”, try these tips…
Rewards
Keep the treat or toy close to your dog’s body by his shoulder. Give multiple treats or let him play with the toy as soon as your dog has rolled over.
Find Treats and Rewards that work best for your dog. You may need to change the treat value if he is not interested in the treat you are using.
Timing
Reward your dog immediately – within a couple of seconds. The longer it takes for you to reward him or her, the less your dog will understand.
Process
Training Time reviews training methods and how often you should train. This can be a tiring trick for some dogs, so do only 3-5 repetitions at a time. You can always come back to it later in the day or the next day.
Dog Training Basics discusses elements that affect your training success. Remember that this trick is more natural for some dogs than it is for others.
Your dog is not “taking a hip”
If your dog resists going onto one hip or another, have her stand and lay down again.
Your dog won’t roll
Keep the treat close to the body, and assist her by placing your hand underneath her body to help push her over. Don’t force the move or she will resist even more. If your dog has arthritis or bad hips, it can be uncomfortable for them to make this move, and you may need to find a different trick, like “play dead”.
