Help with Heeling and Automatic Sit

Rewards

Hold a treat in the hand closest to the dog in the heel position.

Timing

Reward your dog immediately – within a couple of seconds. The longer it takes for you to reward him or her, the less your dog will understand.

Process

Training Time reviews training methods and how often you should train. Dog Training Basics discusses elements that affect training success.

If your dog is not sitting…

As you prepare to halt, say “sit” and bring the treat over the dog’s head (within inches) – when he looks up at the treat, this will cause his rear end to hit the floor. Praise as soon as he sits.

If your dog is not continuing in the heel position…

Lure with a treat/toy in the hand closest to the dog and move forward. Praise when the dog is in the correct heel position.
If the dog has lost focus, use your Watch Me word and praise when he looks at you.
