Basic Dog Training Commands

Send Page To a Friend

As you train with Online Dog Coach, you will notice that we select one verbal command for a given trick or obstacle. Since dogs don’t speak English, there is no right or wrong verbal command. In fact, each team will develop their own vocabulary. For example, there are multiple verbal commands for jump such as “jump”, “hup”, and “over”. You are welcome to adopt our verbal commands or develop your own. If you decide to develop your own lingo, we have a few tips:

  • Pick short one syllable words.
  • Once you select a verbal command, stick with it. Changing the command will confuse and frustrate your dog.
  • Try to pick obvious words for agility obstacles because they will be easy to remember when blazing through a course in less than 60 seconds.

Within most lessons you will find a table of common words used for each trick. Pick the word that works best for you!
