Treats and Rewards

by Brianna - Online Dog Coach

How to teach your dog to stretchTraining dog sports and tricks should be a fun and rewarding experience for both you and your dog. We believe that the best way to have fun with your dog is through the application of positive reinforcement… after all, your dog just wants to spend quality time with their best friend. Guidelines for using positive reinforcement (Do’s) and eliminating negative reinforcement (Dont’s):

Do’s – Tips to Promote Positive Reinforcement

  • Treats: Is your dog food motivated? Small, soft treats that can be quickly consumed make great rewards.
  • Toys: Is your dog toy motivated? Tennis balls, tug toys, frisbees, and plush toys make great rewards.
  • Praise: Is your dog very willing to please? Verbal praise and petting make great rewards.

Dont’s – Tips to Avoid Negative Reinforcement

  • Don’t use harmful training aids such as shock collars and choke chains.
  • Don’t train if you and/or your dog are frustrated or tired. Instead, find a way to relieve frustration by taking a walk, playing fetch, or just cuddling on the couch.
