As you begin Home Training and Tricks II, think about these questions:

Thinking about these questions will help you use your experience with your dog to make the most of this course.

  • When is your dog “in the way”?
  • Where do you want your dog when you are cooking, eating, or doing other activities?
  • What triggers your dog to get especially excited?
  • When is your dog most calm?

Activities and Video Lessons

The following lessons can be trained in any order. The key is to begin teaching each one in a quiet, comfortable setting before you need it. Once your dog knows the command and performs it consistently, you can begin using it in real situations with another family member’s assistance.

For example, teach settle when your dog is calm, then move towards working on it when close friends and family members come over. Another example is to teach “stand” at home, then use it at the vet’s office. Teach “Ring a bell” at the beginning of house breaking your puppy. Have your dog “Wait at the door” when you go into the bedroom, and every time you let them into the back yard before trying it on a walk with that ever exciting leash!
