Jump
The Jump command is the first command your dog will learn in his or her’s agility career.
Process
Set up a series of jumps spaced several feet apart with the cross bar(s) lying on the ground.
With your dog on leash, walk with your dog through the uprights. Say the command Jump as you and your dog step over each jump. Be sure to reward and praise successful performance. Repeat this until your dog confidently passes through the uprights.
Next, ask your dog to pass through the uprights while you walk on the outside of the jump. Walk towards the jump, say Jump, and use your hand/leash to guide the dog through the uprights. Reward and praise.
Once your dog independently passes through the uprights, add the cross bar at a low height (4” to 8”). Remember to reward and praise.
Tips
- Always end your training session with success. This may be walking through the uprights with your dog.
- To prevent fustration, keep your training session short (< 15 minutes).
