The Down command is another FUNdamental tool for your training toolbox. Down is one of the most effective tools for getting your dog to settle or calm down.
Process
Start with your dog on leash and in the sit position. Hold the leash in your left hand and a treat in your right hand.
Kneel on the right side of your dog.
Place your left arm over your dog’s shoulders, say Down, and use the treat in your right hand to lure the dog into the down position.
Treat and reward as soon as your dog is in the down position.
Tips
- You may need to apply light pressure on your dog’s shoulders or use your left hand to gently sweep their legs forward.
- As your dog learns Down, you will no longer need to use your left arm as a physical guide. Eventually, the treat can be slowly faded to a hand signal and then a verbal command only.
