This simple treating method can be used by the entire family to teach your dog to open his or her mouth when accepting treats. Treating should be a reward for your dog and a pleasant experience for you!

Process

Use a low value treat such as their kibble, a dry dog biscuit, or a carrot.

Hold your hand in the shape of a bird’s beak with the treat inside.

Ask the dog to sit.

Say the command Gentle and bring the treat to your dog’s nose.

If your dog snaps at your hand, hold your hand still and repeat the command Gentle.

Open your hand into your dog’s mouth like you are feeding a baby bird. This will cause your dog’s mouth to open.

Do not release the treat until your dog’s mouth is relaxed.

Tips

  • Everyone in the family should continue treating in this manner until your dog learns the command “Gentle” .
  • If your dog still snaps at the treat, you can use your other hand to grasp your dog’s chin and gently open his or her mouth.
