In this lesson you will learn how to cue your dog to Ready. Why should you teach your dog ready? In competition obedience the last thing the Judge will say to you before issuing the exercise command is “Are you Ready?” When you answer, Ready, your dog should immediately look up at you and know you are about to issue a command.
Process
Place your dog in a seated heel position.
Issue the watch command followed by Ready. Treat as soon as your dog looks up at you.
As your dog begins to understand the Ready command, drop the watch command and only say Ready.
Suggested Command Words:
We recommend using the command Ready as this is a specific response to the judge at the beginning of a competitive obedience exercise thereby serving to both answer the judge and cue your dog.
Tips
- Issue the Ready command with a positive and upbeat tone of voice. Remember you are using this command to get your dog excited for the next command.
- If your dog is not looking at you, use a treat to get your dog’s attention by luring from his/her nose towards you face.
