In this lesson you will teach your dog to stand up on command and hold the stand position. This is helpful at the veterinarian or groomer and is used in Competition Obedience and Rally Obedience.

Process

Have your dog in a seated position on your left side.

Place a treat between the fingers of your right hand.

Move your hand laterally away from your dog’s nose to draw him out of a sit.

If needed, place your left foot under your dog’s knee and gently nudge his knee.

Issue the stay command. Have your dog stay for a couple of seconds, then release him with your release word.

Suggested Command Words:

Stand Up Feet

Tips

  • As your dog becomes more confident, issue the stay and walk a couple of feet away.
  • Lengthen the time or your distance each time you work with your dog. If your dog has trouble, shorten the time or distance.
