It is natural for dogs to want a secure, den-like space, and a crate provides a comfortable out of the way space just for your dog. Crate Training your dog is helpful for a variety of situations, and you want to do it before you need it. There are times in every dog’s life when he/she will need to be confined for safety, health, or convenience.

Choose a crate that is safe for your situation, and sized correctly for your dog.

Process

Exposure to the Crate

Leave the crate out with the door open so your dog can sniff and explore the crate at his leisure.

Toss treats and toys into the crate. Say your command when the dog enters the crate to retrieve the treats and toys.

Entering Crate on Command

Say your command and lure your dog into the crate with a treat or toy.

Close door behind your dog for just a few seconds.

Open the door and issue your Release word. Reward your dog for staying in, NOT for coming out. Never give a toy or treat when they come out.

Staying in the Crate for Longer Time

Place safe chew toys in the crate. The toys should be indestructible so your dog cannot tear it up or become tangled.

Lengthen the time you keep the door closed by a few seconds or minutes at a time.

Stay with your dog and stay calm while he/she is learning.

Tips

  • If you feel the need to reward or treat, do so while the dog is sitting or laying calmly inside the crate. Wait a short time after rewarding before you open door.
  • Get indestructible chew-safe toys to entertain your dog while he/she is inside the crate. You can find special toys that have spaces for treats at your pet store.

If your dog is whining or scratching at the door:

  1. Stand quietly by the crate and issue your calming command (quiet, easy, or other soothing word). If they do not calm down, stand with your back to the door and ignore the behavior.
  2. As soon as the whining or scratching stops, open the door and issue your Release word.
  3. Ignore the dog for a few minutes. DO NOT reward the dog for coming out of the crate.
