In this lesson you will learn the use of a release word such as free or OK. This command lets your dog know that he is finished with other commands such as Stay.

The release word can be used after a walk when you take dog off of the leash, after a stay at door when you have company. It is also used in obedience for the stays and in agility at the start line

Process

Issue the stay command and use your stop sign hand.

Keep eye contact with dog.

Return to the heel position and praise the dog.

Say your release word, and move out of the position with the dog

Suggested Command Words:

Free Release Break At Ease Okay

Tips

  • You may need to “proof” the stay by walking away and giving a slight pull on the leash. Make sure your dog stays before working on the release word.
  • By moving out of position, your dog should understand that he or she is no longer required to be in the stay.
