In this lesson you will learn how to teach your dog to turn away from you from a heel position. The turn command is used in agility and freestyle. In agility, this turn is used to turn the dog into another obstacle. It is a direction change in dog freestyle dance.
Process
Place your dog on your left side in a heel position.
Have a treat in each hand.
Get your dog’s attention with watch and take a couple of steps forward (using your heel command if you have to).
Move your left hand in front of your dog’s nose and toward his left shoulder.
Continue luring the dog to make a 180 degree turn. As he turns, turn in the same direction.
Reward as he makes the turn with the treat in your right hand.
Tips
- You can issue a mark. A “mark” is a word like YES, or a click if you are clicker training.
- Do the move with the dog on your left and right sides.
