The pick command is a fun trick for friends and family. It’s also a good way to have your dog work for a treat.

Process

Place a treat in one hand.

Emphasize the word, pick and have him smell and even taste the treat inside your fist.

With other hand, lift his paw and touch your treat hand. After you’ve done that, open the hand and let him have the treat.

Do the paw lifting a few times until he gets what you want. Then give him time to do it himself.

Advanced Pick a Hand

After he is successfully picking the treat hand, offer both hands. Place the treat in only one hand.

Lead with the empty hand, so he’ll try that one first. When he picks it, show him it’s empty and say OH OH.

Give your dog time and let him pick the correct hand.

Give him the treat and praise.

Tips

• If your dog already knows shake, they will automatically lift their paw when you extend your hand.
