Roll Over is a fun trick you can do anywhere. Many dogs do this move automatically, but some need a little help as shown in this lesson.
Process
Start by asking your dog to lie down.
Determine which side is more natural for your dog to roll over by gently pushing your dog’s hips to the right and then the left. You will find that your dog will have a preference when taking a hip.
Once your dog is laying towards one side, say “Roll over” and use a treat to lure the dog’s nose toward their shoulder.
Continue to move the treat – and your dog’s nose – over your dog’s back so he begins to roll over. Be sure to dole out treats as the dog follows your hand.
Suggested Command Words:
| Roll Over | Flip | Tumble |
Tips
- Make sure your dog “takes a hip” as explained above before beginning this trick. It will be easier for him when he roll towards the side he is laying on.
- As your dog’s upper body begins to roll over, you can offer assistance to help her entire body roll over.
- When your dog rolls over more quickly and easily, use treats less frequently until your dog rolls over with a hand signal only.
