Figure 8 is a fun trick to teach your dog and it serves as a great warm-up for a walk or an agility training session.
Process
Start with your dog facing you and have several treats or a toy in each hand. Place your hands behind your back.
Lower your right hand behind your right leg. Lure your dog through your legs and around your right leg while you say Eight or other command of your choice.
Then, lower your left hand behind your left leg. Say Eight and lure your dog through your legs and around your left leg.
Continue alternating your hands to keep your dog moving in a Figure 8.
As your dog learns the command, raise your hands a little higher and stand up straighter. Use the command Eight with a slight swaying motion to cue your dog.
Eventually, you can walk forward and have your dog weave between your legs while you move forward.
Tips
- Remember to keep your training session short (~5 minutes). If you practice this trick too long, both you and your dog will be dizzy.
- Repeat the command each time your dog wraps around your leg.
- Always end your training session with success. This may be successfully wrapping around one leg.
