The shake command is a fun trick for friends and family using positive reinforcement. It’s also a good way to have your dog work for a treat.
Process
Start with your dog in the sitting position
Get your dog’s attention with the watch command.
Use a treat to lure your dog’s head to your left (dog’s right). Notice that your dog’s left paw should be rising slightly off the ground.
Say Shake while you shake your dog’s left paw.
Reward.
Suggested Command Words:
| Shake | Gimme Paw | Give Me Five |
Tips
- You can repeat up to 10 times during a training session.
- By bringing your dog’s head to one side, your dog will shift their weight off of the opposite paw, making it easier for him/her to lift it.
- You can gently lift your dog’s paw if they do not lift it on his/her own.
