Basic Agility Training for Dogs

You already know about the importance of walking your dog, but you can get more bang for your buck if you start agility dog exercises! You can do agility in your own backyard, and even at the park!

Dog agility is a sport where you train your dog to go over and through different obstacles, such as a dog agility jump and a dog agility tunnel. Learn dog training basics using positive reinforcement and build dog agility equipment to play! Online Dog Coach shows you how to use dog commands to guide your pal along a different path each time. You can also make up games to play with your dog.

Who Can Play?

Every breed can do agility training for dogs as long as they are physically sound and healthy. You will need to know how to take care of a dog by selecting proper food, ensuring your dog is a healthy weight, and has no physical injuries or limitations. Check with your veterinarian about canine health before beginning agility dog training with your dog.

Agility Dog Shows

Once you’ve begun agility for fun, you might discover your dog is a pro! This is the time to sign up for dog training classes with dog trainers so you can take what you’ve learned and move to the competitive level. Local dog clubs may host dog shows called trials in your area. The club will choose from a venue which dictates the rules for the trial and the equipment setup. Some popular venues are:

  • AKC (American Kennel Club) – for pure-bred dogs only with a focus on speed and accuracy.
  • UKC (United Kennel Club) – for all dog breeds with the focus on accuracy. Their trials include some interesting obstacles not found in other venues!
  • USDAA (United States Dog Agility Association) – the oldest U.S. agility organization for all dog breeds with the focus on competition.
  • NADAC (North American Dog Agility Council) – for all dog breeds with the focus on fast, safe, and enjoyable teamwork!
  • DOCNA (Dogs on Course in North America) – the newest dog agility venue for all dog breeds with the focus on smooth course flow.
